New Brunswick – Come for the music, but stay for everything else.
That’s the message from the sixth annual New Brunswick Heart Festival, which starts Saturday at 2 p.m. on George Street and Livingston Avenue.
This year’s festival is larger and better, with participation from artistic, cultural, communal, historical, and government groups.
This year’s additions include an artist’s alley, craft merchants selling unique items, dancing sessions with the American Repertory Ballet, a health and wellness tent sponsored by Garden of Healing, and a history nook hosted by members of the East Jersey Old Town Village.
The New Brunswick Heart Festival, presented by State Theatre New Jersey, New Brunswick Cultural Center, New Brunswick Performing Arts Center (NBPAC), and the Arts Institute of Middlesex County, is a free, all-inclusive family festival that has grown far beyond its musical beginnings.
Saturday’s celebration will also feature representatives from the local police and fire agencies.
“It’s a little of everything that New Brunswick and Middlesex County have to offer,” said Tracey O’Reggio Clark, the New Brunswick Cultural Center’s interim executive director. “Our main objective with festivals is to explore how many facilities we can provide and how far we can go beyond that. How many family members can you gather together at once? How many unique experiences are you capable of having? How many cultural experiences can you have?
Of course, the organizers haven’t overlooked the music.
Tap dancer Omar Edwards, funk, Motown, and disco tunes performed by The Discoteks, dance performances by InSpira Performing Arts Cultural Center, and Grupo de Danza Folklórica La Sagrada Familia are among the live events planned.
