For kids aged 7 to 14, the university art museum is offering a range of workshops.
The Rutgers University–New Brunswick Zimmerli Art Museum is thrilled to announce the return of its Summer Art Camp, which gives kids the chance to develop their artistic abilities and explore their creative side. This year’s camp offers weekly lessons in a variety of subjects for kids ages 7–10 (full, but waitlist available) and 11–14. The meetings will take place at 71 Hamilton St., New Brunswick, N.J. from July 1 to August 2.
According to Claire D’Amato, associate curator of education at the Zimmerli, the camp will be able to offer more courses this year that incorporate various media because of the new instructors who are coming. In addition, on August 10 at Monument Square Park, the New Brunswick Heart Festival will feature artwork produced at the camp.
Returning and New Classes
A brand-new course at this year’s camp is called “Comics, Clay, and Cardboard: Imagination Unleashed!” For individuals who enjoy drawing cartoons, superheroes, or inventive works of art, this session is ideal. In order to create their own original characters and stories, students will study character design, color theory, and shape language while working with both 2D and 3D media.
Additional fascinating courses include:
En Plein Air
Drawing inspiration from the Impressionist practice of painting outside, students will utilize sunshine and the natural world as their creative inspiration. They will draw and paint outside as they experiment with different artistic mediums.
Experimental Painting and Weaving
Students are encouraged to explore with various materials and media, such as paints, collages, dry clay, paper, textiles, and mixed media. Young artists will be able to express themselves creatively with the support of the many activities.
Now Let’s Start Popping
This program, which is another new offering, explores the vivid world of Pop Art via the creations of artists such as Roy Lichtenstein, Yayoi Kusama, and Andy Warhol. Motivated by these artists, students will produce vivid, striking 2D and 3D products. (Only waitlist as of right now.)
D’Amato stressed that the camp’s goals were to connect local families with the museum and to make art accessible to all. “We hope that our camp helps children find their creative voice and develop interests that will last a lifetime,” she stated.
